Hamilton Global Specialty enters US property insurance market

New division focuses on E&S risks, with plans for January product introduction

Hamilton Global Specialty, an underwriting division of Hamilton Insurance Group, has announced its entry into the US property insurance market through Hamilton Americas, its US managing agency.

In addition to the new office, Lissie Van Leunen (pictured above) has been appointed as head of US property, reporting to Pepe Marquez, president of Hamilton Americas.

Van Leunen, who joined Hamilton this month, is tasked with building a property insurance team and a portfolio focused on commercial excess and surplus (E&S) risks. The initiative aims to introduce new products by Jan. 1, 2025.

Van Leunen brings 15 years of underwriting experience to Hamilton. She previously served as underwriting consulting director at CNA Insurance in Richmond, Virginia, where she worked for three years. Before CNA, she held various senior roles at Markel and Argo, also in Richmond.

Van Leunen will collaborate closely with Hamilton’s London-based property insurance team, led by Mark Johnson. She is based in Hamilton’s Richmond, Virginia office.

Adrian Daws, CEO of Hamilton Global Specialty, remarked on the strategic timing of Hamilton’s expansion in the property insurance sector, stating that Van Leunen’s addition to the team supports Hamilton's growth strategy in this line.

“It’s a great time for Hamilton to expand on our existing groupwide property insurance offerings and I’m delighted to welcome Lissie to our team. She will be integral in supporting the continued expansion of our complementary offerings in this line and market,” Daws said.

In June, Hamilton Global Specialty also expanded its ranks with the addition of Niamh O’Brien as its new chief actuary.

O’Brien first joined Hamilton in 2021 and led its key actuarial reserving activity as well as providing advisory support as one of its actuarial consultants. She also held senior actuarial roles over the past 20 years in firms such as Caitlin, Hiscox, WR Berkley, and Tokio Marine Kiln.
